Alternative wood cutting

This is a thread for alternative cutting, anything except a conventional gas powered normal chainsaw.

Electric saws, hydraulic saws, hand saws, bucksaws, crosscuts, battery saws, pole saws, brushcutters, axes, recips...whatever you might have.

We all cut a lot of wood, but sometimes not with a regular saw! So post 'em up!

Anything that cuts besides conventional gas chainsaws. Like I said, electric saws, brushcutters, bucksaws, pole saws, axes, etc. I own all those things, don't you, don't most guys who cut? They are all interesting and there's some interest in them here, you'll see posts here and there down through the regular chainsaws posts, I just thought a single thread to put those sort of topics and discussions collated together might be useful and of some interest.

And this has what to do with chainsaws? You've got 1500 posts and pull a stunt like this?

Of course, you had more than 1500 posts, so I guess it's alright...

I don't see it as any "stunt" or anything, and it certainly wasn't my intention. I read you could buy a sticky, checked and I had enough credits, so I wrote one and bought it, because I thought of a niche type all encompassing set of topics that could go together. It says the moderators would move it up into the sticky area up top, thereby off the front page but easy to find. It is what it is, I thought it might be interesting to some and a handy place to put oddball posts that don't exactly fit on the straight chainsaw forum, but still are interesting enough and related to cutting wood to talk about or post a question in. And that's it. "Alternative cutting"

I actually thought it would help keep the straight chainsaw forum area "cleaner", while at the same time providing an area for those other type of posts.

Your way of thinking is exactly why there is clutter. People who don't want to post in the appropriate place because they don't feel like it.

There is an off topic forum, why not use it? To much scrolling to get there? otstir:

The kind that thinks unzipping your pants and showing a well-intentioned newer member your post count shows a serious lack of class?

Especially from someone who has no similar qualms about starting backback blower threads...

So trying to gather the threads about splitters, mauls, pole saws, etc., that do pop up in the forum into a single thread in the sticky forum is promoting clutter?

Is this a serious question or, are you just funnin' me?

Why not put a sticky for chain sharpening questions? Or, one for modded worksaws? Or, one for milling questions?

I've used a Super Sawzall to prune and remove small trees and large bushes next to houses where I couldn't run a chainsaw due to noise. The damn things actually cut pretty fast if you have the right blade. The hard part for me is making sure there's always enough space beyond the end of the blade that it doesn't bump something (the SS has a 1.25" or so stroke) and bend/ruin itself. The blade's a blur when the saw's running. At least you can always see where the end of a chainsaw bar is....

It was doomed from the start.

I did just see an infomercial for these: JawSaw though. Do they count for this thread?

I've done the same thing with a plugin recip saw and a long coarse wood blade. Seems to work OK on smaller branches. I have also done the reverse, used an electric plugin chainsaw as my construction work recip saw, back when I didn't own a recip saw. Comes in handy sometimes because you can do bore cuts, although watching out for nails and so on is not fun. Good for cleaning out old wood on remodeling/repair jobs. That's the old craftsman with the original powersharp system that I had, that I have regretted selling a number of times now. That was my only chainsaw for a number of years and when I sold it after a lot of use, including all the branches and firewood I cut with it around my house and out on some landscaping runs, the chain and stone still had some life left. The quiet part is real nice, as is the ability to run it inside if you have to.

That's funny. I've never seen you complain about any chain sharpening, or modded work saw threads...

Back to the topic at hand, I have been a hand saw and hatchet man for the last 3 weeks thanks to a broken hand.

--actually yes, that saw fits the parameters for this thread. Especially if someone had one and would write about their experience with it. Still cool to drop the link so we can look at it.

--OK, just watched the vid. Pretty spiffy idea actually for what they are advertising it for. That grabbing up a pile of branches and cutting them all at once was *slick*. Never seen a saw like that really, except for the opposite range real large processors with the automatic cutters.

And I like it can go from a ground saw to a pole saw easily.

I like that feature in a saw. A lot.

I wish there were extension attachments like that for normal gas chainsaws (and my Oregon batt saw), rather than having to buy another powerhead and bar and chain, a whole 'nuther tool. Seems sorta silly when you already have a nice engine or motor, a bar and a chain, with handles... I know they have them based off of string trimmers, the various multi tool setups, but I haven't seen any large ones based off of ..at least midrange, say around 50cc or so saws. Maybe someone tried it, I just don't know, just wishin sorta out loud.
