Had one recently that almost made me change careers, customer
brought it in saying it bogged down when you gave it gas. Also
said he put a new carb kit in it, which with a Bing carb, is very
expensive. I took the bait, figuring I could easily figure it out.
I went through the carb, all looked good, except for some
boogering at the high speed jet, which was from a failed attempt
at removing it, so I replaced the jet, which did nothing. Full
teardown and crankcase pressure test revealed nothing. Saw
started and idled perfectly, just bogged down when the throttle
was applied, no matter where the high speed jet was set at.
The inside of the carb was clean, perfect. I was ready to throw
in the towel, which is not easy for me to do.
I took the carb apart one last time, grasping for anything.
I looked at the area under the circuit plate, and noticed that the
gasket holes did not totally match the plate, and that was it!
I got out another kit{the correct one} and the gasket was
different from the one in the carb. The customer bought the kit
from another dealer, and he must have sold him the wrong kit,
so I was left to figure it out. Why Bing would have 2 different
kits that were identical except for a tiny variation in the size of
a hole in the circuit plate gasket is hard to guess, but I wasted
a lot of time figuring it out. Bing is an obscure carb maker
anyway, so it is by no means a common problem.

You win the prize for sharp technical skills. Good job!

I'm not certain that Bing is such an obscure carb maker. I had a Puch scooter when I was a kid...that had a Bing carb on it, I think BMW's have always had Bings on the bikes and most of the cars. A friend's dad was restoring a DKW; I am almost sure that had a Bing, too.

Marvel-Schebler, Kingston, and Stromberg; now that would be obscure.

Hey Fish, how do you expect me to harass you if your line is always busy?
Anyway, good job on the carb, those types of problems usually make the saw dealer put on a whole new carb. I hope the saw owner was appreciative of the money you saved them.

I'll make the scum pay, err customer....

Eyewolf, or eyolf,
Bing is obscure in my chainsaw experience.
I also never had any Puch when I was a kid, my mother told me
it would make me blind.

Seriously, Stihl is the only saw I have seen with a Bing, but I
don't get out much.

Scooters around here will get you an ass whoopin.

Sorry, Fish.

I'm sure that diaghragm carbs on chain saws, by Bing, are rather obscure. For that matter, maybe so are the old, black BMW bikes.

I had to have a scooter...I was only 8 or 9, and couldn't earn enough money digging worms and catching frogs to sell to fishermen to buy a Harley.

My 2nd cousin, who's really into old Harleys, calls his rides, "scooters".

I hate them friggin bing carbs. Their like zama's, a disease.

I just did a 038 that had a Bing on it.And you are right there is two kits.My Stihl dealer tried to sell and tell me that the kit for a 48A101B will fit the 48A101A carb which I had.I told him to go look again and there it was. Some people:angry:
