I recently planted an amber glow redwood. The needles appear to be drying up. We did have a frost about 4 days after it was planted, but it had minimal impact on several other new trees I planted. I’ve planted 6-7 new trees in the last 2 years and had great success with them. This is my first redwood and just can’t figure out if I’ve done something wrong. Thanks in advance to any help/advice anyone may have.

The symptoms in your pictures could be a number of things. I would tend to think not frost damage. The direction to look towards would be, drought, fertilizer burn, sour mulch, pesticide misapplication etc.
I haven’t put any pesticide out, but the fertilizer burn might be it. The nursery I purchased several of my trees from had some fertilizer starter packs. I used them as was directed. However I purchased my redwood from a different location but used one of the starter packs. Maybe the redwood is more sensitive to that than the maple and magnolia I planted.
Would you suggest I try to dig the tree back up and clean out the hole, then replant with fresh soil?

How much fert did you use and what formulation was it. How long has the tree been in and what soil amendments did you use?
I used about a 1/4 cup and mixed it in with two bags 4CF of garden soil. See attached picture of the fertilizer and soil. The tree is about 5-6 foot tall. Was a 5 gallon pot/root ball. I have a clay consistency in my land, so dug the hole 2 times wider, planted root ball and filled the rest with the garden soil that I mixed fertilizer in with.

My guess is the damage is caused by a synthetic auxin herbicide.
Another possibility. I have a field near my yard. It was sprayed with a herbicide and there was some drift I know. There was a 3 foot by 30 foot long patch at the edges of my yard that grass was killed. My tree is around 60 feet away, but in the same direction. No grass dying any where near my tree though. Wonder if the spray was drifting high and caught the tree. I have not put and weed killer down in my yard, so this is the only possibility. I’ll check with the farmer and see when and what he sprayed.
