I just bought a house with a bunch of old fruit tree varieties I know little about. I would like to get some basic information about "King" and "Banana" apples. What are these apples best used for? I have heard that a King is a dessert apple, but I guess they aren't ready for picking yet so they taste sour. I also have a "Transparent" variety, which is healthy but hollow, so I want to remove it. Do either apple trees rely on this transparent for pollination? My next question, I had two Bartlet pears, one died over the summer. Do pears need polinators? Or is the one tree OK by itself? I need to know if I should replace the tree.
