i logged several trees from the farm behind be. They blew over and are green. One is not familiar but I used an app to id as black gum. Have any of you guys have any experience with it? I‘m thinking stringy but seems dense. Is this stuff more work than it’s worth? I’ve cut firewood and run a sawmill in this area for over 50 years and I think I’ve seen it one other time. Thx

What is your app? I could not figure out what a tree from all the books in the library and asked on here a while ago. black gum was what It seemed to be. And it wasn't at the location under my avatar. The branches come off at kind of 90 degrees according to the literature and on this one. It has not blown over and I did not cut it down.

Yes, black gum. Absolutely miserable to split! It doesn't split, it just tears. I wouldn't want that if someone cut it to 16" and dropped it off in my yard. Burns fair.

I like black gum. Burns with a bright yellow flame. It is hard to split though as I must remove the 4 way wedge and even then it kicks the 2 speed hyd. pump into low. Anything that will fit into the stove whole doesn't get split. It burns extremely well. We call it 'bomb wood' for the way it burst into a beautiful yellow flame.

My 30 ton splitter has zero issues with it, It can suck to stack due to the way it splits. I’m burning my last bit of gum now, Should be gone this weekend. 3 splits in my stove burned for 6 hours Sunday, The stove was around 600° at the start and 400° when I reloaded. I won’t chase gum like I will oak or locust but if it’s my tree I’ll keep it or close by I’ll grab it. Only reason I see to trash it is if you have unlimited amounts of handy oak or such.
