Blew up stihl 028 super, debating fixing?

New to the forums. I've been reading a bunch on here and it's been helpful.

I picked up an 028 super last night, was gonna get it for 50 bucks, started up alright, ran okay, seemed a little off but it had been sitting. Blew up within two minutes and I got it free. Piston hits top of cylinder, obviously something let go in the bottom end. I'm not sure where to get reasonably priced parts but if it's worth going through I would like to make a little project out of it since I've almost got my other project finished for now (79 z28 camaro).
Anyway I have nothing into the saw, got it for free because I bought a nice 024 super instead for the same price.

Any ideas?

Sounds like an excellent project. The 028S saws were very plentiful and are still popular. Getting a P&C and other parts shouldn't present a problem. :clap:
 
Lot of good used 028 cases with crankshafts/bearings on Ebay. Type in Stihl 028 case in search box. Most under $40. Many good used cylinders too. Meteor pistons (come with Caber rings) are available at a lot of places for those saws.
 
Or type in "Stihl 028 Super" in the ebay search and you'll see everything available for the supers.

Lots of good info posted by others above! I'd start by taking it apart and see what you need. Sounds like you may just need a crank, bearings and seals. Depending on how much damage was done to the piston and cylinder.

I got a snowmobile free after the seller blew it up when I was looking at it too!
 
True, but aren't all the parts the same, except for the cylinder, piston and rings?

Naw, like the 041, there were a lot of tiny differences, which make it hard to say if the part will swap. It is also hard to part them out because
of these differences, which explains all of the 028 and 041 junkers I have laying about.
 
Not worth it, when you have no personal relationship to the saw.

Depends on what he means by "worth it." If making a monetary profit is meant, he'll have to find solid used parts to come out ahead on resale, and if too much stuff got busted, a profit would be very iffy. If having fun doing a project is "worth it" and he ends up with a solid working saw to use, then it seems worth it to me, regardless of what brand/age the saw is. Just how I'm looking at it. :)

Best advice given so far is to tear down the saw and see what it needs.

I wouldn't even consider putting in any $$ in repairing that saw..!!

If something down below let loose...that saw ain't worth it.

Just part it out and make some $$ rather that throwing your $$ into the wind.

Sounded to me like the OP was interested in doing the saw as an educational "project", not necessarily as a resale saw. Since all the Stihl "Pro" saws are very similarly designed, might be worth it if he's interested in learning to rebuild them. With the type of damage he's described, he'll be getting quite an education!

That's what I was thinking. I can't imagine rebuilding a lil ole chainsaw will put off someone who just rebuilt a Z28.
 
Are 028 and 038 parts interchangeable? I just got a couple of those for parts from the same person. I'm just lookin for another saw. I'm well capable of doing the work, im just trying to price parts out. I'll rebuild It all day if I can keep it under 250ish. Thanks to everyone for the information, I'm kinda excited to tear the motor off this thing tomorrow night, I tore it half apart yesterday, she ain't lookin healthy, if I can piece a new motor together the saw itself is in decent shape

I want to see picture of the Z28 and the o28.

The Z28 is my favorite, I had an 81 which I believe was the same body style as yours. Selling that car was the stupidest thing I ever did.

But back to the saw. If you can get what you need for $100 then why not if money isn't to tight.

I didn't see if you had inspected the cylinder or any other parts, If the whole low end is bad then it could get a little pricy

None of the "important" parts will swap out between the 028 and 038 series, though they are from the same era and some peripheral parts may swap.

That $250 figure is about what an excellent 028S brings on ebay, though there are really good deals to be made on them here and there at pawn shops and garage/estate sales. I got my last one for $150 off CL, and it was sweet.

Be interesting to see what you find when you take it all the way down. I'm no expert on prices for used or new parts, and if you throw out a list of what's needed, I bet you'll get a lot of help. Plenty of very strong used parts available for those saws if you are patient, and that's a good way to keep costs lower. Also, you might find a so-called "parts saw" for very little money that will get you a lot of what you might need. Most parts saws seem to have fried P&Cs, of course.

If you are willing to hold that $250 in your pocket and look at sales, CL and ebay, you'll find a strong 028S sooner or later. But it really sounds like you are itching for a project. :D :D
 
The "z28" is a work in progress clone that I started a few weeks ago. Basically buying z28 parts and throwing together a Frankenstein. It started life as a 6 cyl car. So far I've got a motor that's almost turn key, couple more adjustments and drop in the distributor and it should be set. Just a little 350 with a decent set of heads, some flat tops and a cam I built for another car that I never got around to. The rest of the car is solid, a little cleanup, some floorboards an paint and I'll have a new toy. Ive built a couple trucks from the ground up, I just want another chainsaw, basically just for weekend jobs right now, I'm working for a company during the week right now taking trees down so I'm starting to get more into it.

Try the "Swap Meet" thread. You may be able to trade your 038's for the parts to fix the 028S. Rebuilding the 028S should be a fun project. It will be a good firewood cutting saw when it is running again.

An 028 is what brought me to this site i the first place. I dropped a big ass pine on it and crushed it flat. I was able to use the clutch from that saw though. :laugh:

Don't listen to the nay sayers.......just fix the saw.
