I'm new to the wood burning business, but I enjoy a nice fire and the warmth it provides.
I've got a relatively small fireplace, but I was wondering about the effectiveness of those Metal Fire backs...I've read tons of testimonies that they increase warmth by as much as 50%.

Anyone have any experience with them?
I've also noticed that the thick cast iron ones are super pricey!:(

Would I fare the same by getting a friend of mine to just cut me a piece of 1inch thick cast iron shaped to my rear fireplace dimensions and come out a lot cheaper?

They work, the real deal vintage firebacks do bring a healthy sum of money. If dollars are tight make your own, or the fireplace heat circulation grates made from tubular steel with a blower are still available and those really get some heat from a fireplace back into the room if that fits a need better.
