When sharpening a chain does one just push the file forward and remove it to then again push it forward or is it advisable to just stroke it back and forth without removing it from the chain for the desired number of passes?

The hardest part is getting a leather strop in there to put the final edge on them.

I send mine out, but do touch them up.

But I always lift my file on the backstroke.

And, I rotate it on the forward stroke.

There's a tiny toothbrush size brass bristle brush I use every so many teeth to clean the crud from the file.

Me too but I find a nice sharp rap on anything after every tooth (with the tip of course) will keep most of the filings out anyhoo.
