I just keep a Sharpie in my saw box. I color the top of the first tooth I sharpen and stop when I come back around to it.

Those colored links on the Stihl chains wear off within 2 sharpenings.

Why not just use the file in your right hand and file a mark into the tie strap directly in front of the first tooth you sharpen. Problem solved and you did not have to carry anything extra with you.

If you touch up the chain every tank or two - you have tooooo many file marks.

Just always index back to the first one you made and you only end up with one.
