I just saw an Internet guru claim crunchy carb diaphragms make saws run lean and destroy pistons on the exhaust side. Is it possible for a saw in that condition to run well enough to fool anyone? I would hate to think I'm ruining tools while thinking they're in great shape.

No, it won't fool everyone. You would notice hesitation and other things if you are used to running saws. If new to this, you could be fooled. An incorrect mixture setting will do it too!
