There's near 500 White Pine saplings after I logged our 60a 5 years ago. About 1/3 of them from 2' to 8' tall have 2"-3" white "caterpillers" or grubs with black dots defoliating the needles only on last years' growth. The remianing needles on the tender top growth are rust-color dead. ( Sorry, no pics since we're still on film....advice for an all-weather digital appreciated.)
There are too many to spray, and we're not comfortable with the chemicals anyhow. Advice ? Destroy the pines affected ? Cut off the dead leaders ? Pour cheap Bud on the affected pines ?
I've been cutting up the deseased pines, dropping them in place. The caterpillers or grubs are not on all of the eaten pines.
