I remember getting a Colorado Blue Spruce seedling in the spring of 1966 when I was in first grade. There are a lot of spruce trees in older neighbourhoods because of this program. Seems like good PR.

More than 700 grade one students learned about the importance our city’s urban forest at the 14th annual Arbor Day celebration at Sir Wilfred Laurier Park.
City forestry staff and volunteer arborists will help students discover the importance of caring for Edmonton’s trees by demonstrating their tree climbing and pruning skills. In this fun-filled day, kids will also participate in nature walks, check out bugs, ride in bucket trucks and fly on zip lines. The celebration ends with the ceremonial planting of a tree to signify the students’ commitment to nurturing Edmonton’s urban forest.
The City of Edmonton started the Arbor Day tradition by distributing evergreen seedlings to grade one students in the early 1950’s. The Province of Alberta soon recognized an educational opportunity and began providing seedlings to every grade one student in the province. In 1997, the Forestry Section of the City of Edmonton created a celebration incorporating the students in a tree-rific day of learning and fun.
Julius Sterling Morton, founder of Arbor Day, initiated Arbor Day in 1872 to encourage planting trees as a way to sustain life. The idea spread across the world, and Canada began celebrating Arbor Day in 1884. Edmonton’s Arbor Day is celebrated each year on the first Friday prior to May 10.
The Arbor Day Celebration is made possible with the help of many volunteers from the tree service industry and cooperation from schools, teachers and parents. The Arbor Day Celebration is open to the public.
