Estimating tree canopy cover within municipalities.

Anyone have any experience with estimating tree canopy cover from aerial images? Either with the ocular, dot grid, line intercept/transect or digital image analysis methods? I'm also interested in exploring measurement of canopy cover at edge of pavement (CCEP). Anyone used any of these methods? Anyone used a spherical densiometer in an urban forest environment? Thanks in advance....

I do not have any experience with the methods. last year the USFS did a "fly over" to determine the canopy cover of Boston. Now there is talk of planting 100,000 new trees over the next ten years

Been there already.....some helpful info, but I was keen to talk to someone who had actually implemented some of these methods in an urban forestry management plan.

http://www.americanforests.org/ American Forests has info on a software called CityGreen that can calculate canopy coverage, pollutants removed, stormwater runoff, etc. it is very good.
