So everybody says "ya gotta do a muff mod to let it breathe easier, + it'll run better/cooler". So I gave it a try on this 2 year old Homelite. I figured I got my money out of this thing along time ago, so what the heck if I screw it up. Well the junk that was in this muffler made the exhaust gas turn 3 90 degree bends to finally go through the spark arrestor screen.
I cut the corners with my dremel cut off wheel, unfolded the tabs separated the halves and gutted it.
Used a dremel grinding wheel to file down the internal supports(1/32 to 1/16 inch) so the two halves would sit flush again.
Folded the tabs back and crimped in my vise.
I don't have a welder or brazing equipment to put a pipe in so used the dremel to open up the louvers.
Now I can see the piston through the exhaust!
Let's just say this saw WOKE UP!! I buried it in this stump (pinion juniper) and it just wouldn't quit. It went from being a tree limber to tree killer.

Did you have to adjust the carb?

Didn't adjust the carb. It started right up and took off. The only minor issue I have is after cutting for awhile and I let it idle for a couple of minutes it dies out. But it starts right up with one pull.

If you are cutting in dry area's it would be an advantage to fit a spark arrestor I 'm not up with your bylaws but in my area if cutting on public/state land you are required to have one fitted hefty fine if caught without one the powers seem to be targeting the freebie/wood scroungers

the screen is still there but all the muffler junk is gone
