Ok, I guess a bribe is in order to get some more interesting topics going in here. If you become a member or are a member and have at least one post at arboristsite.com I will add your name to the contractors list for free. Please leave info about your company on this thread. You have to do tree work in order to qualify for this. It might benifit you. It might not but what the heck, its free!! It will give us an opportunity to get a who's, who in here also. I have been happy the last week as we have grown 25%. I intend to keep on advertising the site to gain more interest and more members to keep all of you interested and educated. Thanks again, Darin

I operate a business in addition to my main profession. I am a forester working full-time in industry at the planning level and occasionally at the logging level.

I live in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, about 4 hours north of Toronto. My own business interest has three parts. Snow plowing and tree service work started in 1981. The third thing I do is a backhoe service.

At one point, I owned the third largest tree service in our market, and I sold that to the biggest fellow so I could pursue bigger dollars in forestry. Too many FBN people cutting trees, and I wanted to get back into forestry practice. I maintain my insurance coverage for my tree work, and I kept all the saws and hand tools from the business when I sold it, so I am still well equipped to provide a full service. However, I don't do that much tree work anymore - I kept about 1 dozen of my best accounts, and between them and their friends, I have a nice amount of work to fit in with my day job and family.

I like the site so far - no major egos have signed on yet - a problem I have seen elsewhere. I hope it stays this way.

My name is Brian and I live in Orlando, FL. I started out with my own lawn business at 18. Sold it at 25, but kept my tree stuff. I have done tree work for myself part time while working full time for others (income taxes, health insurance reasons), but always maintained liability insurance and licenses for my business. Due to a fall last year I have given up climbing, but still wish to remain in the industry. Currently looking for a position to utilize my knowledge without destroying my back any further.
I also started a small club in Yahoo Clubs called 'Arborist Hangout' if any of you are on Yahoo and wish to stop by. Lots of photos in the photo section from some of my jobs.

Brian, I would think there would be plenty of jobs out there with your knowledge. Like a salesman. Isnt that what we all graduate too? I mean, its hard for us to get a desk job after being outside all of our life. Well, keep us informed on the job situation. GOOD LUCK!!

My name is Scott Swearinger, I live in bettendorf iowa.
Ive been in the bus for about 2 years, my inlaws bought the company from my cousin and he had it about 3 years.
Im not a certified arborist, and dont really know if i need to be!, i run the company myself and do most the cutting. We dont do stumps but are considering buying a remover.I use nothing but STHIL saws, 066,036,2-026 2-019, 1-ht75 pole saw
i do the climbing except i dont go really high, i hire somone in for that. we had a 65ft bucket, 110hp perkins/gravely chipper, bri mar dump trailer and all ford trucks, we sold them to reduce overhead. now we rent when we need to! so far this year our business has been steadly picking up. ther are ALOT of scrubs in my area so myself and other legite tree companys have been forced to drop are rates, thats no fun!

Scott,

In regards to your comment about needing to be a certifed arborist, here is my story.

Started climbing in 72, knew of good pruning practices, tried to do good work, and thought I was good. But I topped trees when asked to do so, and used spurs, plus some of my pruning practices were less than optimal.

I first heard of the ISA in '89, and joined right away. Three great publications provide great opportunities to learn: Arbor Age, Tree Care Industry (NAA publiction), and ISA's Arborist News. Plus many good books and training aids and seminars. I was a bit lazy about getting certified, and didn't do so till 96. Since then, my business and reputation have prospered.

Still learning!!!

Thanks for the offer, Darin,

Barnett Tree Care

ISA Certified arborist # PN 1152

28 years in the industry, in business since 1984.

Slogan:

"Specialists in the care and preservation of trees"

Consulting, diagnosis, hazard tree evaluations. I call in other consultants as needed. All size jobs are welcomed, but our expertise is in large/technical pruning and removals. We recently had to perform a necessary removal of a huge 54" dbh atlas cedar in an extremely difficult location. Crane access wasn't possible, but we still got $6300 for the job, which took some 120 manhours!! At 60-65 per hr, we should have charged over $7000!

Not to say the jobs requiring my Okatsune hand pruners and Silky handsaws aren't welcome, they are, even hedges....uh. I reckon..!

Hi Darin (and everyone else),
My name is Brett Youngster. My wife, Suzanne, and I own Tree Works Environmental Tree Care, Inc.
We're located in Land O'Lakes, FL (just north of Tampa)
We provide tree pruning, removal and related services.
We're a small company, five employees, but we have plenty of work and would like to grow if we could find good workers.
We have two bucket trucks, two chippers, chip truck, stump grinders, etc., but we just can't find good, reliable climbers and ground workers.
We've been in business for 16 years, I'm a certified arborist and I like to think we do high quality work.
I guess our most unique feature is my dad. He works with me almost every day, dragging brush, chipping, running ropes, raking, and all the rest. So, what's so special about that? He just turned 83 last month! He says the hard work keeps him fit and trim.
Anyway, I love this site, keep up the good work.
As my dad says, "Keep those knots tight."
Brett

Brett,

Good to hear from you, especially about your dad. I have a fellow friend/part time worker who I ran into five years ago. I had known him when I was first breaking into the tree industry, back in 75. He was a hotshot then, but a typical spur climber. I have taught him most everything I know, and he has loved learning the new ways. Now he is considering getting certified! Point is , he is 67, and in awesome shape. He started falling timber 48 yers ago, and climbing shortly therafter. Has quite an ego, so it is remarkable that he has been so willing to learn. He also has caught eight steelhead over 30 pounds, including five on a fly. No one else in the world has managed more than 2 of that size. Steelhead salmon sport is the ultimate fly fisherman's challenge. Thus the ego, I reckon.

Hey treeman14, I posted you as a contractor, but have little to no contact info on our contractors page. It probably wont help your advertising much. Let me know if you would like anything else on there.
Darin

Rbtree, I erased part of your post advertising another board. Sorry, arboristsite.com rules. This is going to be a more popular board than that one anyway. Just give it a little more time.

Is this really a business?

Hard to follow Tom's credentials, but sure like the idea of tree home design and construction (one of the best coffee-table books I've ever read is entitled TREE HOUSES).

Climber, consultant, and remediation advocate. No longer uphold professional affiliations in favor of nurturing an independent perspective. I take-on work from hazard removals to site planning to reforestation contracts, but find myself referring work on to small contractors who need income. I'll get over this someday.

Tools include soil kits, tissue analysis lab, hi-vol air sampler, mass spectrum analysis, microscopy, Stihl saws of various sizes, aborplex ropes, Harkin roller winches, a old pair of spikes (thanks Tom), assorted saddles, and many good friends both on the local agricultural scene, the cancer research community, and some disgruntled ex-federal employees, both law enforcement and forestry related.

I don't advertise...although here I enter a new approach. I specialize in trees that still decline in spite of assorted professional treatment regimens - never give-up hope, as long as there's a sliver of life left, there's a good chance we can recover it.

I work throughout Texas and have been calloused with experience in New Zealand, South America, Northwest Territories, and eastern Europe - where they certainly do things differently than they do here.

Sanborns Tree Service started in 1999 when I left the local TG-CL branch where I was running the prunning program.

I am a subcontracting climber (Freelance) working for several micro companies in the Milwaukee Metro area providing that extra set of hands on big projects, when a company is searching for a new employee, or when the backlog gets too deep and the pace can't be picked up any more.

I have traveled around the US in the past 2 years on contract, have my own liability insurance, provide a IRS form W-9 for tax accounting and come with my basic tools.

As a representative at large for the GRCS I can bring a unit for those who are interested in purchasing one.

Small wounds, work the tips, and maintain inner canopy.
