I am sure most of you who wander in the woods looking at tree's notice that several fungi grow mostly on deadfall.

In the area I reside we have mainly Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, Birch, Maple and some other evergreens. A couple of days ago I cut down a dead birch tree that was covered in these Fomes fomentarius, "Tinder Bracket" fungi. When I used to live in Norway I collected these fungi, dried them and displayed them in the house. I was just reading more about these yesterday and found out that they are being researched as a possible cure for stomach cancer and indigestion.
Kinda interesting.
Wikipedia also mentions that these are used as tinder as well.

What sort of fungus grows around your area?

Btw: The birch wood turned out to be mostly rotten. :(
