good compression for a 288 with 0.030" squish?

Is 120psi bad for this bore (54mm for a 288) on a 281 crankcase?

Might depend on how many gaskets were missing and how much silicone was smeared?
But will also depend on the quality and suitability of the gauge you used to measure the end result.
Then factor in the quality of the new components and the fact they have not been run in yet.

Bit low imo. Should be more like 150psi range if new. your squish could come down .010" more as well.

IIRC, My 288 fresh rebuild with a thin gasket put the squish at .22 (or .022 or wherever the decimal goes) and while I don't own a reliable compression tester, you gotta start it like you mean it, and my arm will pay the price if I don't go into it fully committed, LOL

Hard to say but you’re probably ok. I think most stock Husky saws have compression around 140, so 120psi seems low. However, I also think .030 squish is excessive and should probably be closer to .020-.025. If you tighten up the squish you’ll see compression rise, and I would do that as it will make better power and be more efficient. But on a big saw if you want it nice and easy to pull over you can leave it as is.
