Been checking out the Stihls on eBay, 034 & up.

This is not logging country, so I would have no idea where to look locally for a used saw in this class.

I like the dolmar/makita as much as anyone else but I'm not sure the filters on them are up to cutting burnt timber. I'd look for a used stihl 440/460 and put a heavy duty or max flow filter on it or keep several extra stock filters handy. Husqvarna saws have a system on them that sweeps dust and debris past the filter so this may be an application that they shine.

In N Texas I don't think he's gonna be needing a 36" bar... A 20-25" would probably be more than sufficient. In which case, he could get by with an 034, 036, or of course an 038 or bigger.

Dolmar

I agree that the Dolmar is the way to go. I just bought a 5100 and it is a heck of a saw. I got it in Azle and they could have the 6400 or 7900 out to you from the distributor in Dallas in a day. I have the guys number and such. Shoot me a note if you want it. I live over in Argyle so we are not far apart. If the larger saws are anything like the 5100 you won't be disappointed. I got it for $349 plus tax with an 18" bar.

I have an 038 Mag that I use for felling. I run a 24" bar and she does the job. The 5100 is being used for everything but the big trunks.

Side note, sorry to hear about the fires. We were all smoked up for a few days but did not get any flames at my place. Sucks to have your place scorched. If I can help just let me know.

Are you kidding me??? This is undeniable...Other brand applogists always have something irrelavant to say about this video. Top notch filtration, bar none.

Thanks for the tip, that looks like useful info. Are those the only model Stihls the max flow filter can be added onto? How about the older 044, 036, etc? And do all Huskys have that feature?

i put the filter and cover from my 084 on the 044, talk about max flow, bolts on to but doenst match the body lines at all.

Your best all-around bet hands down would be a good used 372 with a wrap handle. Enough to pull a long bar when needed, very light, well balanced saw with the wonderful Anti-vibe and filtration.

If you had to I guess a 440 would work too. Half wraps and 50-60cc class saws are out of the question for all chores IMHO.

a couple 036's just went on ebay for $250-300 that looked to be in good shape. They will pull a 25" bar without too much trouble

Yup. If you want a big saw, just be patient and find a good used one. I have a Husky 394xp w/ 32" bar and full wrap handle that I bought 1.5 years ago for $500. It's a beast.

If you are sawing scorched and blackened trees, full-chisel chain will dull most quickly if you don't use an axe to shave off the chared bark and wood. I bring along several extra good chains whenever I cut dirty wood.

new = Solo 681

second hand = Husky 288xp.

Solo is a great saw very simliar to the Dolmar and Bailey's have them.

the Husky 288 isnt quite the power of the stihl 066/660 but is a great saw that can be had cheaper than the stihl from places like ebay. usually around the $350 mark.

372/460 are great saws, but from what ive seen on the second hand market you will pay a good $400-$500 for a good one....

I got real lucky myself and bought an old 044 from one of the members of this site that lives in my town and works on saws. The saw was not in primo condition but has 160 PSI compression, is very mechanically sound and runs like a raped ape. I paid $200 for it. However, you need to be careful buying older, used saws. The guy I bought mine from is very trustworthy and a friend.

I would also love to check out the Dolmer 7900. I have heard so many good things about it but I can't really justify buying one as I have the 044 .Not to mention that I know of no dealers in my area.
