anybody here able to tell approximate age of a tree by the girth? have a large oak, was blown down during hurricane Isabel. tree has a 7 foot diameter trunk.
You can't count the rings, then? You could core it, and count those rings, or go for the highly inaccurate 4.5 times the radius in inches method for oaks. So thats DBH divided by two, then multiplied by 4.5... Supposed to work, for open-grown oaks.
Oaks are fun, inlaws have a large 5.5 ft DBH Q. nigra that was cored by DNR @ 10 years ago during their oldest tree drive at 186 years, while beaver dam st park (adams co, Ohio) has some that are 10"DBH, cored at 80 years (deep dark hollow).
Good luck!
