I’m about to clear some land with smallish (6” & under) cedar trees and I’d like to use the poles natural, for railing and possibly a pergola but I have no idea how to cure/dry them so they won’t split. Any help greatly appreciated! Jean

Howdy! I don’t think you need to do anything special. I’ve cut down several eastern red cedars, limbed them, and laid them across some treated 4x4’s so they’re off the ground. This was about 6 or 7 years ago and they are fine. I know my grandfather cut some down and used them for a section of fence right away. This was about 40 years ago and those poles are still good.

Cedars are pretty stable after felling.
They don't twist or change shape much.
You could de-bark them after cutting to length.
I'd buy a Draw Shave and remove bark and like JMT said, put them on pallets until ready to use.
Don't cover with tarps or anything, that will just promote mold and fungus.
