Have you pressure tested the little fellers block?????
When I see one acting like you describe I do the pressure test BEFORE I even try anything else.
It helps eliminate lots of cranking and battle scars.
If the block will hold 5 psi I then know that I have a chance with fixing external stuff.
If the block has a air leak and carbs changed, reed valves flogged, point/condenser/ magneto a guy can quite often cause other issues in addition to a leaking block and when he gets a good sealed block it won't run then due to previous things he has flogged.
Just a little hint from experience.
