How clean does it have to be?

Well Ive began brushing my unlined masonry chimney for about an hour now in order to prep it for an SS liner. I didnt opt for the insulation, how clean does this chimney need to be? I really dont want to buy the insulation. All the contractors around here said they never do it.:bang:

just make sure theres no big deposits
