Hi everybody!!

I've got a Husqvarna 242xp from ebay. It was very dirty and I started the disassembly and cleaning.

After a litter of Oregon MX14 (great stuff) of cleaning solution and many many hours I manage to get it in a dissent state.

Original cylinder is a Mahle 42ZN13 and in good condition.
Original piston is also Mahle AB. Had lot of carbon but cleaned it carefully.

I noticed the cylinder had light marks of usage where the piston skirts are.
Mahle piston has small but noticeable play inside the cylinder (without ring) so I got a brand new Meteor B piston for 242xp that fit but...

Seems that Meteor piston pin distance is different than Mahle and will give lower compression..

Now I'm thinking using the original used Mahle AB (got some shinning in the lower skirt both sides) but with Caber ring that Meteor got in set..

Any thoughts about?

The Meteor piston isn't totally correct. It would not be my first choice.

The closest aftermarket piston you will find -nowadays- is sold by Lil' Red Barn:

Ebay 242xp piston

I would keep your original piston too though... sounds like, with a good ring, it would be a usable spare. OEM pistons and cylinders for 242xp virtually do not exist any more, so be careful with the parts you have!

Quattro is right.I'd just rering it.
Be sure to vac/pressure test when done. The crank seals will be toasty by now unless they've been replaced.
Bearing and seal replacement can be a real PITA in finding new ones.
Good luck. They're really good little saws.

Another 242xp question Does anyone know where I might get a set of sealed crankshaft bearings? I have a lovely 242 XP with a damaged seal.......................................................................................................................

Flywheel side is still possible to buy from Husqvarna, 738-22-01-25

Parts Tree 242 flywheel crankshaft bearing

PTO side Bearing is no longer produced. The majority of what you will find will be "good" USED, and I've never seen NOS for sale. Ebay is just about your best bet.

44's & 444's share the same PTO bearing so if you know of a parts saw you could scavenge those bearings (assuming they're usable), or else look for a hulk to buy.... my understanding is that in the USA the 44 was incredibly common.

Multitudes of people have spent a lot of time trying to find or replicate the unique sealed PTO bearing of a 242, and while everybody seems to find a really close match, there's never been a identical substitute found.

I love my 242xp, it's a great little saw, but with 90% of its parts being NLA one must generously consider the consequences of bagging on it. At least with my 3-series I could easily replace anything that could break.
