japenese maple anomaly?

So maybe 6 years ago I bought a lil seedling Japanese maple for like 3bucks. Now I am fully aware that 'you dont really know what your gonna git' for maybe 5-10 years. But I was totally shocked and thrilled to find that my now 5ish foot maple of unknown parentage is becoming a lace leaf!!! At first glance I thought something was chewing on the leaves.... Has anyone else witnessed this transformation?

There's over a hundred documented varieties of Japanese maple with untold number of undocumented ones. Nothing that happens with them would surprise. me.
