Maybe... I took the slider out tonight and saw that it was a rough cast piece. No post milling or finishing to smooth it out. I used 250 and then 600 grit wet/dry to polish the bottom and the sides. Didn't take it all the way down, just worked at it until about 50% of the surface area was bright and shiny. We'll see how it does if we have another cold snap. If someone was real determined and had some equipment, they could mill it true and flat (which it isn't), and also polish the stove side too.

I've taken my cover off 2 or 3 times this winter and sprayed it down with graphite. Figured I'd see if I could fix it permanently.

Jotul USA has a fix on the air control: new, better machined slider and catch.

Call them in Portland, Maine. They sent mine last fall--no charge.

The design is not very effective compared to primary air controls on older Jotuls and other EPA stoves.
