I'd be careful about recommending Dave Johnson's book. It's a pleasant narrative but is rife with " i know it's not the right way or the safest way but this how I've always done it" kind of stories and advice.

I've found that Husqvarna's "How to work with a chainsaw" guide is quite helpful. Covers everything from pre checks to felling. Can be found on the international husky site.
