My parents have a magnificent 50 year old Live Oak that is giving cause for concern. About 4 or 5 feet off the ground, where the branching from the main trunk begins, a low spot formed that collects water and debris. It's been like this for "several" years and the decay now seems to go 6 or 8" deep. The area is about a foot long and 2 or 3" wide at the widest point.
The question, of course, is how should this be treated? If the area were cleaned and dried, would expanding foam insulation work to keep further moisture out?
TIA.

We don't suggest closing off wound areas from the "natural" processes. No one is foaming trees in the forest. However, your concern is valid for further review. Contact a local Certified Arborist in your area to look things over.
