I was at a party on New Year's eve up west of Portland, OR and met some guys that had a 120 acre lot with perfect stright Doug fir trees growing on it. I mean these are pole quality trees, low taper, great crowns, great size for milling (2 footers). So, I asked them why they were not cutting them and milling them... they all looked at me and shrugged. Then they 'splained that Doug fir prices are in the basement and that they are only cutting the worst trees down and bucking and splitting them into firewood.

...and wait while the trees grow. Red Cedar is a different story. Good prices for that lately. Red cedar is not very good firewood though, and BLM restricts any collecting of cedar for firewood around here.
