Me too, Tree ID help?

Found this while out hiking around doing some tree measurements today, my initial thoughts are Boxelder. Surrounding area is primarily Sugar/Red Maple, Red and some White Oak, few Elms, Shagbark and Pignut Hickory, Black Birch. Input?

For reference, trunk is 5.5' in circumference at chest height.

That be some some sort of maple. Probably. Pics really don't help too much.

Get a close up of the buds. That might help.

Are both pictures of the same tree?

The bark on the flagged tree in the first picture looks like tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera).

The second photo looks like it is most likely a maple (Acer spp.)

yes both pics are the same tree.

If the tree has white sap it is Norway Maple (Acer platanus). This is best seen while leaves are on. take a leaf off of the tree and the petiole will have white sap ooze out.

It's January! They don't have maples with leaves on them, or even sap in the stems at this time of year. If he had leaves, he probably wouldn't have posted the inquiry to begin with.

Yeah, deffinatly not a "herring bone" twig pattern

I'd need a closer picture of the buds to opine
