hey I am also wondering what is the maximum diameter the MS 361 can cut?

If you lived in Norway over by SawTroll I'd have to say the 361 is good till about 8" wood........

Its good to about 30inch wood and then its time for a bigger saw
I just finished cutting 30 inch hickory with a 25inch bar tonight and I was thinking is would be nice to have a 36inch bar. Time for the 7900

well since they usually run 20-24 in bars you could cut 40+ inches.
we run them with 16" bars and cut pine that can get up to 30''. no problem just make a back cut on each side and you will be ok.

Ms180's cut very well for there size because of the narrow chain but if you are thinking about cutting more than say 4 or 5 cords, a bigger saw is needed. If you want to stay around that price range, used is the way to go. Craigslist has some deals every once in a while and then there is ebay. Usually everything on ebay is a tad highly priced but deals are out there. I have seen 026's ready to go cut wood for 170 to 200. 034's are great saws and they can be had for around 200. Where at in Akron are you? I can possible help you find a good dealer.
