Oak tree roots

Got 2 oak trees in front yard that over the years the roots on surface have started to become a serious trip hazard. Thought about trying to bury them, but the amount of dirt to cover, and make it look right is unreasonable.
Can say the top 1/4 be sawed off . And root coated with something to prevent rot/ hurting tree?

Can get some when get off work.
Roots vary in distance from trunk. All atleast 3 or 4 ft. And avg 8-12in in diameter
