Old McCulloch story?

I just remembered a story my father told me when I was little. Something about how Mr. McCulloch bought a PBY-5 and had it restored, then flew with his whole family out on vacation. Seems that he didn't plan very well and ended up landing off a beach in the Middle East. Arab fighters set up a machine gun and shot his plane full of holes. The family then hiked into the desert where they were resuced by some other military.

Is this true? My father was big for jokes, but I'm sure he believed this.

don't know if that story is true, but i do know robert mcculloch was an avid aviation buff. heres a page with a little history on him.
