I'm painting them out here in the PNW where it rains 99 days out of 100 mostly just to keep the rust under control. Just takes a couple of minutes with a rattle can and also lets me know how much wear I'm getting on the bar.

LOL, I was talking about re-painting, as I beleive the OP did!
I was kinda joshing you..I figured you knew. Seriously, I repaint bars on some of my saws that won't get used. You should see some of the rust on items in my un-heated building after a long winter.

I sanded a primed a bar that was all rusted. I used rustoleum primer. Color looks pretty close to Husqvarna original color. Is paint necessary? Not sure how long primer by itself lasts but I was under the impression primer alone doesn't protect much.
