Hi all,

been a while since I've been on here last and back then I only had a Husqvarna 44. I got the bug and have since bought the following;

Jonsered 535
Stihl 041 AV
Stihl MS290
Stihl 039

I decided to muffler mod the MS290 and 039 even though I've only had them for a week.

So here's my pics:

The muffler before I modded it:

I decided to open up the existing holes:

I then opened them up further:

I then opened up the cover and removed the limiters:

The questions I have are as follows:

1. Has the muffler cover been modified too greatly, should I have done it differently? If so I can get a new cover but how should I do it?
2. I am yet to start up the saw, what initial carb settings should I try?
3. What paint should I use to just give it the once over?

Hopefully will have them both running tomorrow

Thanks

surely yours is restricted by the cover?

mine is about 80% of cylinder port area

isn't 1 1/4 for both excessive seen as stock for H is 3/4 and L is just 1/4?

That is the standard setting with limiter caps in place, not having been removed.
The suggested stanard setting having removed the limiter caps is 1 turn out on each but i find 1 1/4 turns out on each is a safer bet, adjust then re-install the caps.

Also it would appear you have the illusive flippy capped 029S/039. I do not believe it is a frankensaw, notice the different flippy caps. What is the date on the silver sticker?
I started a thread on this;

i have several saws running at 100% without problem. yes, you lose some effectiveness due to the deflector. it will run cut for cut with a stock 310.

Can anyone advise as to whether the MS290 and 039 have the same carb aside from limiter caps? The 039 was playing up today after felling a few trees and I guess it may need a carb rebuild / fuel hoses replacing.

In the interim can I use the MS290 carb on the 039?

Thanks
