My wife has started a number of avocado trees from seed. She wants to plant one or more of them now. I was wondering if it is necessary to plant at least two trees close together for polination or if a stand alone avocado will produce fruit?

A single avocado tree will produce fruit, but you may want to reconsider planting those seeds. Almost all avocado varieties planted today are grafted clones. This means that they do not come true from seed. The pit from that delicious avocado will not yield the same delicious fruits. Now, if space is not an issue then it might be worth trying just to see what you get, but don't get your hopes up.

Also, might it not be a bit cold for avocados in N. California?
