I have had these two Snap-on ratchets for over twenty years. I use the hell out of them. The last couple years they started to slip under a load (hard on the knuckles). A friend of mine works at a place where a Snap-on truck frequents. In the last year the Rep. has fixed them twice only to have the same problem weeks later. Last week I took them apart, the last two times he "fixed" them all he did was put the new main gear in. I called Snap-on to see if I could send them in to be properly fixed. I told them whats going on, and settled on them sending me a complete rebuild kit for each free of charge. Two days later I received a box with the two rebuild kits and a NEW 3/8 ratchet for my inconvenience. I was completely shocked! Now I have a couple "old friends" back in service and a shinny new one. I have NEVER seen a ratchet so smooth in my life. You can hardly feel the clicks. Ratchets are not used a bunch with chainsaws, but I like to give credit where its due. The new one is on the top.

+1 they repaired a ratchet that my dad has had since i was a kid and im 27 this past summer, done it right there on the truck no questions asked.

they also made good on a kershaw knife for the old man, not to mention they sold me a sweet cordless impact:hmm3grin2orange:

Looks like the 80 tooth ratchet. I have two of them and they are smooooth. Best thing is, in tight spaces you get more movement. The 72 tooth 1/4 is impressive as well.

I have purchased many ratchets at pawn shops and the rep does not question repairs on them. They maybe high priced but you can not beat the quality or service.

I make my living with my snap-on box and tools as a jaguar mechanic. they are pricey but more than make up for it

trends will change

I have had the same craftsman set since I was 17 years old and replaced a couple of the ratchets at the store..since craftsman is such a pita to get new ones..I will not buy them anymore. If and when I break another tool I will spend the money on snap-on. They have been around forever and not likely to leave any time soon. I am sure others will do the same

People can say what they want about Craftsman power tools, but their hand tools are sweet. As for the warranty, I've had two situations that said everything:

1. My wife and I moved in to our new home and started doing some yard work. We found buried in the way back a Craftsman screwdriver that was just barely recognizable--brought it to the local Sears and Bam! new one.

2. Used a flathead as a pry bar and busted it in half. Took it to the local Sears and, you got it, Bam! new one.

Yeah they replace it, but why not make a tool that doesn't break? I went through this with allen wrnchs. Get tired of making trips to sears.

I had bought a long handled 1/2 Snap On rachet at a flea market for $15. I had taded it in on a new one to my dealer. I got a new one because the chrome was peeling off. He said that Snap On tools are warrantied down to the chrome.

I have a few Snap On wrenches, picked up over the years at garage sales, flea markets, etc. I buy anything well made, Craftsman, Proto, Gray, Blue Point, etc. Who makes Husky? I was given a 1/2" set.

Husky is Home Depot's house brand, and the majority of the tools are from China.

Yeah, like Kobalt at Lowes -- used to be really good, a friend told me that at one time they were made by Snap-On, but now are horrible. I bought a set of Kobalt shorty combination wrenches because I thought I wouldn't use them enough to justify an expensive set. There was a lesson -- if there's a reason Snap-On wrenches are expensive, there's just as much reason why the others are cheap.

I disagree with the Kobalt tools, only good luck on my part with them. I assembled thousands of pieces with a Kobalt socket set, and it still looks new. I was not easy on them either, using an impact wrench with normal sockets. Most are made in the US, not by Snap-On (who contract out anyways), but most likely the same company as Craftsman.

OK, I'll take it back. My only experience was a shorty combination wrench set that I thought I wouldn't use enough to justify an expensive set. They were very rough. Two of the open ends had to be filed bigger in order to fit what they were supposed to, and there were two 1/2" wrenches and no 9/16". I filed the small expense under "tuition" and figured they were all junk.

alot of my chrome sockets are craftsman, but all my wrenches are snapon. i'll tell the flank-drive plus is nice. i bolt my co-worker rounded off with a blue-point wrench i was able to break loose with my snap-on wrench. i make my living with these tools so i use the best. kinda like loggers use the best saw for work. it's gotta be something that performs well and takes abuse

ratchet

i've been using my 1/4" drive snap on ratchet every day of my working life since 1987, maintaining aircraft. original innards, not let me down once. best gear on the market, bar none

These are the guys that make Craftsman. Notice the list of brands they have on the right. They have bought out many of the old classic names over the years. I don't know if it was because they were failing, or just owners looking to retire and cash out. Probably some of both...

I have beaten up and gotten many Craftsman tools replaced over the years. I was a bit put off when they started handing out rebuilds for ratchets instead of new ones, but at least they stand behind them. No they aren't Snap On quality, but then they darn good and a lot cheaper and easier for the non-mechanic to get access to (although probably not anymore with web sales).

Always had good luck with Snap-On

but Jan '09 the screws came out of my 3/8 ratchet while putting intake set in my '97 Cutlass. Left it at a local Snap-On stop, dropped the dealer an e-mail, and haven't gotten it back yet. Last time they said, "can't find parts, are getting you another", but ......

Guess it's time to ring him up again ........
