Can someone explain what happens when heavy equipment is driven around a trees root area? I've read here on AS that this is called root compaction. Is it known what happens? Do existing roots die or does the highly compacted soil resist new root growth, etc. Thanks!

Both of your suggested issues occur.

Soil compaction reduces pore space in the soil, which restricts water and air movement. Existing roots can suffocate.

Soil compaction also increases what has been termed "soil strength," making it harder for new roots to grow.
