After the storms blew through a guy in town had a massive tree blow over. I asked him if I could have the tree and he was more than happy to let me clean it up for free. I am thinking it is a pecan or hickory tree. He said he had some hickory walnuts and oaks in his yard but wasn't sure what this one is. When I split a piece it looked like hickory but not as dark. Here are a few image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg

Wild/black cherry is great smoking wood! Makes a nice fire in a fireplace. Its bright and smells wonderful. Its pretty good stove wood too. Not as hot and long a burn as oak , but its good wood anyway.

Any wood is good wood I guess. Never had any cherry. It will be used as stove wood. How does it do as far as storage? I already have 2 cord split for next year, do you think it will last split or should I leave it round? Weather has been pretty warm this year and I haven't burned near what I thought I would.

I would split it. Seems to rot quicker in log form. Its not going to disappear if you don't split it. I just think it would be better to split it fresh that way the center won't get a chance to get punky and it will dry faster.
