I am trying to find a shade tree to plant in the front of our yard to
help shade the yard/house, I would like the tree to be good sized when
we buy it, the problem is knowing or trying to figure out which kind to
get. People suggest ash, or maple. Which grow faster? I am told this is
zone 4 here in Neligh Nebraska. Do you give opinions on what to plant
where? This is new for us....Do you have a site that shows photos of dif
trees that we can look at??
THanks,
M.A.

You need to look at soil quality, drought tolerance, mature size; both hight and spread.

You need to look at cultivars, when people say ash or maple these are such wide groups that you could get lost.

White ash 'Autumn Purple' does well in dry cold. Burr oak too.

Another thing is planting properly so that you don't get girdling roots 5-10 years down the road. I've posted on this in the past. The new way is easier then past recomendations.

The trick is to match the right tree to your particular spot. there are literally thousands of types of trees, but if they won't do well with your particular spot (soil type, PH, climate, etc.) then it won't be right. I'd recommend starting with your local County Agricultural Ext. office. They should have a wealth of knowledge on not only soil conditions but also the best trees for your particular area. :)
