Splitter problem

I've got a friend with a TSC splitter. The splitter is at his other house near DC. Said the engine was running fine, the ram extended into a log and "sounded funny". Also said it was very slow. He stopped there and shut it down. Asking for thoughts. I suggested either stainer on suction or filter (don't know if the splitter has either). Looking for any other ideas. It's a little tough to troubleshoot from 150 miles away!
