90% of the time its due to running straight gas in them (no oil mixed in the gas). The scoring is caused by excess friction. There may be other causes, but they are far less common.
Used engine in good condition on Ebay can be upward of $100 with shipping. A new engine would be more than that. Light scoring can be honed out and a new piston and rings put in. Bad scoring will need a new jug and piston. Worth it? Depends on the condition of the rest of the saw. Beater? Not worth it. Near new? Might be worth it.
