Well, technically, it's not honing that I do, but it seems to describe the event more accurately than polishing, sanding, or cleaning with a very fine abrasive abrasive. The idea is to carefully remove the scratches and even out the inside surface of the cylinder so that new rings can mate successfully and restore the compression. I usually do this by hand in the evening with no less than 400-grit sandpaper or Scotch Brite and a light weight oil until LOML says that its smooth enough and time to go to bed. Next day I assemble it and it usually runs.

There are many cylinders that cannot be saved. Those I trash, but I usually give the Mahle's a second chance. My thanks to StihlofaDeal64 for further clarification.
