I'm posting this for my dad, he has this Stihl farmboss 55 ms 290, and no matter what, its never easy or even difficult to start. Its next to impossible. There is a problem with the plastic switch in the picture. You can start it by removing the cover and manually adjusting the flimsy wire, but thats too much trouble every time you go to use it. Any help will be appreciated

You can replace the choke actuator rod along with the detent spring for the multiswitch for less than 10 bucks.
The problem usually happens when someone who isn't familiar with how to use a Stihl multi switch works, and forces the switch up to the run position while the fast idle lock is on.
If you remove the air filter you can see the choke actuate. Look and see if it is closing all the way. If not, either bend the rod slightly less bent or replace it.
It only takes a little bending, if you go too far it will mess up the geometry of the multiswitch, and it "Stihl" won't function right.
If it was bent, chances are the detent spring is bent too.

Most likely the throttle control popped out in the past, and was put back wit the spring above it. That is usually what is wrong.
But why make guesses when he could snap a pic?
