Yea, I wasn’t very clear in my prior comment. What I meant to say was that modded (ported, or MM), can require a higher no load max rpm than the limited coil will let the saw go, and it needs to be tuned in the cut.

Even a non-modded saw set at the mfg spec for no load max rpm, should be double checked in the cut. It’s often difficult to distinguish the saw four stroking vs hitting the rev limiter. There are quite a few good videos how to do it if you search for “tune in the cut” or something similar.

In general, I think a tach is worth while to have. I’ve used it on my atvs, lawn mower etc. too
 
Bought an Optima PET 1100R, can buy them at any Echo dealer. Works on 2 strokes, 1,2,3,4, cylinder and four strokes 1-8 cylinders.
Picks up as fast as any tach I've every used
