We planted two shumard oaks last year that were purchased in large pots. They were each about 7ft tall. Both trees had spindly trees less than two inches in diameter at the base. One tree is not putting on much new growth, but seems to be OK - leafed out fine this spring and hasn't dropped any. The other tree is in a wetter area and has exploded with new growth. It has put on 2ft or more of height this season, but the trunk remains too thin to hold it upright after some of our Georgia thunderstorm winds. Is there anything I can do to encourage the trunk to build-up rather than adding height? Should I be worried about the other tree that has put on virtually no new height?
