Tree damage diagnosis?

Anyone tell me what this damage is from? (hopefully the picture will be included.) It is an Aptos Blue Redwood (grafted like most are) 1 year old. The picture makes the scar appear lighter. The outer tips of all the branches in 2-4 feet tall area are damaged. I planted four trees and this is the most distant to the house. It got poor watering initially as the water line I set up for it was faulty and it was left dry for 3-4 weeks in spring.

The plant seems to be fine except for these few marks. Deer are uncommon in the immediate area but not impossible. If it was deer and ends were clipped will the branches be able to continue outward growth?

It looks like something clipped a few candles and a few needles are dead at the tips(which might have been due to your poor watering initially). In any case you have healthy new growtrh coming on so I wouldn't worry-It will probably be just fine.:)
