tree from cuttings

I am going to lose a small tree and I would like to start a new one from a cutting but don't know how. Don't know name of tree,my mother started it from a cutting. Any info would be appreciated.

Can't say without knowing species. Some you can just poke a whip into the ground and pee on.

Others you can dip in rootone and stick in a jar of water.
