took these leaves from a tree at my sister's house that my brother-in-law wants to take down. any help would be appreciated. i think elm from the tree ID book that i have, but the bark looked smoother than that of elm in hte picture. they live in northwestern NJ, and have a bur oak, as well as chestnut oak in the backyard.

The catkins look very much like that of Birch. As do the leaves.

Possibly, a Hornbeam.

Yup... A Birch.

Describe the bark...

Then we can make a positive ID...
