Description Benefits Supplemental Questions

The purpose of the class is to maintain trees for appearance and safety on City owned properties. The class is responsible for the trimming, pruning and maintenance of live trees, the removal of dead or unsafe trees, and the removal of tree and limb debris for all City owned properties. The class works according to set procedures under direct supervision.

Example of Duties:
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.

Operates cherry picker or bucket truck and removes dead or dying trees or interfering branches or limbs around power lines, streets, public buildings and houses.

Climbs trees using ropes and saddles to trim or remove branches or top trees.

Operates chainsaw and stump grinder.

Operates front end loader and/or backhoe to remove debris or to move dirt for tree planting.

Operates chipper truck and/or tandem dump truck for debris removal.

Operates power and hand tools and equipment including power saws, blowers, and gardening tools.

Cleans, sharpens and maintains assigned tools and equipment.

Cleans up downed trees, branches, limbs and/or debris from storm damage.

Plants trees.

Sprays trees for disease and insect control.

Prepares routine reports on all activities completed.

Interfaces with citizens and the general public as necessary to answer questions and comments about tree maintenance.

Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Typical Qualification:
Requires high school, GED or specialized vocational training.

Requires one year of experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses:
Requires a commercial driving license with proper endorsements in accordance with Division of Motor Vehicle regulations within six months of hire and in some departments before one is hired.
