I have a large white pine, about 30 inches in diameter.

There is about a 6 in hole in the trunk, which goes about 4 inches into the trunk. It looks like a branch was cut from the top and then pulled away at the bottom, which then started to rot.

There are some mushrooms growing in there and some loose wood. The hole runs down into the tree.

Is there any way to stop further rot from this hole?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
Matt

well, in most cases its best to just let the tree heal itself
if theres mushrooms and wet decayed wood loose in the hole it cant hurt to clean that out
dont take any of the solid wood out tho
it isnt generally advised to spray sealer on or fill the hole as this slows healing
i do however think in rare cases a sealer can be beneficial in preventing further decay
one cant say anything more without actually standing by the tree tho
does it seem as tho your rate of growth exceeds the rate of decay?
how long have you been monitoring this?
